FOOD, PHO, PHOTOS AND PHUN ;-)

Our son is an excellent cook, so last night when he cooked vertical chickens for his little family, he sent us a photograph.

I have a recipe for Blueberry Chutney Chicken that is in the Silver Palate Cookbook that I cook by the same method as his famous or infamous BBC, otherwise known as Beer Butt Chicken.

Since we love chicken as well, I altered the photograph that he sent me of his chickens before he put them on the cooker and told him that they looked a lot like me and his Dad without our clothes on.

Ah, the miracles of Photoshop!
Frank and I are always looking for new and different places to eat and this restaurant is now on our new favorite places list. Since we have become fans of Anthony Bourdain and his show, "No Reservations", we have become more adventurous in our eating habits. Sprouts hasn't been open very long and is doing a booming business. It has a great menu and everything is cooked to order and served fresh.

The name of the place is Sprout's SpringRoll and Pho, and they invite everyone to come enjoy N. Arlington's newest Vietnamese restaurant. It is located in Lincoln Square next to Jason's Deli and offers a unique selection of Springrolls and the tastiest Pho (the Vietnamese Noodle Soup) in town. We were not familiar with Vietnamese food, but now I think we'll become addicted to it!
We started our lunch today with Torpedo Shrimp (Tom Hoa Tien) which are 5 Jumbo shrimp, cream cheese, and green onions all rolled up in a light wrapper and fried to a crisp. They were absolutely delicious. We shared this dish but I really wish I would have had an order all to myself!

For our entree we shared Shaken Beef with Rice (Com Bo Luc Lac) which is tender, diced beef sauteed with sweet onions in a mildly spicy marinade. It was served with steamed rice and a side of their house salad.

Both of these dishes were unbelievable. If you happen to live in the Arlington area I would highly recommend this place. The service is excellent and the food is absolutely delicious.
Hopefully we'll be heading for Europe soon and I'll have many tales to tell on our return. In the meantime, Bon Appetite!

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY!

A lot of things have been going on the past couple of weeks. To begin with, it started raining and I was beginning to think that Noah would be showing up soon. Our pool man, Mark, came by for his usual weekly visit.

Not everyone has a long time friend who not only cleans the pool but talks on the phone while doing it. He and our son, Franklin grew up together and he used to live right around the corner.
Anyway, when he left, the pool looked wonderful (as always) and then the heavens opened up!

It rained nearly 10 inches in a little over 3 days and we thought the pool was going to go over the top. I don't mean drizzle .. it was constant rain. When it finally subsided, the front porch was covered with worms!

The poor little things had drowned. I didn't realize they can't swim. Maybe that's why they make such good bait to fish with. they can't get away if they have drowned!
Now .. on to things more pleasant. The procedure I had 2 weeks ago was working pretty well, so I was in a cooking mood. I found a recipe in my "Pass the Polenta" book for baked chicken, so I decided to fix that. It was the first time in a long time that I had felt like undertaking something that would keep me up and about for any length of time. I also thought that I would make a pie .. that sounded yummy to me!

There's nothing better or more American than home made apple pie a la mode!
As I was in the middle of this, I received a call from the kids and they said that they would like to come and see us. Frank hurried to the store and bought more supplies and I started my cooking marathon. I cleaned and trussed two large chickens,

and popped them into the oven. When the family arrived, the house was filled with the aroma of garlic, rosemary, sage and chicken roasting and it smelled heavenly.
The adults had a nice visit inside while the boys swam in the rain. Since there was no lightning it was OK. When they got tired of swimming, they came inside with us.

I had ordered the game, "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" the week before, so we decided to play while the food was cooking. It's a great game and everyone can play.

Harry, our Grand dog, was worn out from his swim, so he decided to snuggle down on a couch pillow and have a nap.

He wanted to play but the questions were too hard for him ;-)
When the chickens were ready they looked wonderful!

The boys both said that it was the best chicken they had ever eaten and that was a REAL compliment since the youngest one, Connor, only eats fried chicken. They even cleaned their plates for a change. I was so thrilled. My efforts had not been in vain.
I also made parsleyed potatoes and they were delicious as well.
I even threw in some English Peas for good measure but they were not well received by anyone under the age of 30!

The meal was a big success so my mission was accomplished. In fact, there was enough left over that we had 2 more meals from the left overs!
On Wednesday of last week, they performed the "big" procedure on my back ... the Rhizotomy. All went fairly well. I had a T-shirt that had a pattern on it with similar colors as those in my doctors apron, so I decided to wear that. Thought we could look like twins and we would have if he wasn't much younger and cuter.
There was a male nurse who tried to put the port in for the anaesthetic and he couldn't find a vein. OUCH!

You can see the look I was giving him as he was fishing for the vein. Look at my hand now and it gets worse looking by the day! When he did this to me it puffed up like a balloon! I was NOT a happy camper.

It really hurt and it looks worse as the days go on!
Fortunately that was the only hitch in the procedure and I'm feeling much better now. I'm in very little pain now and hopefully we'll be able to make the trip we have planned in a couple of weeks.
Our Book Club at the church has started back up (we took a break over the summer) and we're studying Dante's Inferno.

And to think I thought that Henry VIII's book was hard . Well, let me tell you, this book is no walk in the park. As a matter of fact, it's Hell!
Some good friends have just bought a new home and they had us over for dinner a couple of nights after my procedure. Their new home is beautiful and the food was delicious.
I'm hoping that she will share these recipes with me.

We had Fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp, asparagus and mushrooms and Chess Pie for dessert. Larapin!!!

She always sets a beautiful table and that night was no exception.

Then the next night we went to a concert with some friends we go to church with. There is a group called the Good Times Singers and the evening as well as the entertainment was wonderful. It's a local all male chorus that is similar to the Vocal Majority. We had a delicious spaghetti dinner served by the wives of the singers which was followed by the performance. Their voices and the blending of harmony was glorious.

As I said before, my back is doing much better so since I didn't have to walk too far and didn't have to carry anything, I got along just fine at these two outings.
Our youngest grandson, Connor, celebrated his 10th birthday last Saturday. He loves to cook, so we gave him cooking lessons at Sur la Table in Dallas for his gift. Here is the card I made for him.
Photoshop is a wonderful tool.

He's going to learn how to make bread and pretzels. We did not attend the party but here is a photo of him opening his card. It was a "kids only" affair :-)

Our former priest's wife makes these adorable dolls. Here is her latest project. I love it! She's called "Little Pouty Pumpkin" and I think she's absolutely adorable.

She's ready just in time for Halloween! She makes the entire doll and her work is amazing.
An artist friend reminded me that there was to be a special on TV about the life of Georgia O'Keeffe. It was on a few days ago and I couldn't wait to see it. Several years ago when we were all painting at a lake house, I decided to do an O'Keeffe portrait from a photograph that Alfred Stieglitz had taken of her.
I really miss those paint outs. There was a great camaraderie there and we accomplished so much when we painted together.

Below is my painting with my interpretation of this photograph.

It's painted in watercolor and I don't think it's bad as one of my first portrait attempts, even if I do say so myself!
Guess I'd better go and fix Papa some breakfast. It's starting to rain again. Hope my feet don't get webbed as we're feeling like ducks here in Texas!

It's dark and dreary and a good day to stay inside, study and read. At least everything looks wonderfully green and healthy!
Thanks once again to all of you for your prayers for my health. I'm doing so much better and hopefully in a few weeks I'll be pain free. I'm blessed to have you for friends.

READING, RHIZOTOMIES AND R&R

There's been a lot going on at our house the past ten days. I'll start with today. I was at the hospital at 10:15 this morning for another treatment on my back ... something quite different from the last one.

Unfortunately, the last treatment wasn't as successful as we had hoped, so my Doctor took a different approach. Frank took this photo with my Iphone and I'm really disappointed with the images. The quality is not as good as I like and I thought it would most certianly take pounds off and make me look much thinner. Wrong!
Anyway, my cute doctor had his designer scrubs on again and I was able to sneak a quick photo or two of him for those of you who wanted to see him. Almost makes the procedure worth while!

He injected me in six different places in my back and we're praying that this works. In the original procedure last week, he only injected me once with steroids. Sometime that works and sometime it does not. If the procedure today works, then I'll go back in in about 10 days and they will do a procedure called a Rhizotomy. Today's procedure was a diagnostic procedure and he won't perform the Rhizotomy without this preliminary work up. Here's what he did today if you're interested. Just click on the links.

You can also check this next one out to see what the next procedure will be.
Hopefully, if all goes well, we'll be on our way to the beautiful Mediterranean in less than a month, sipping martinis from our balcony in Venice and watching the tourists glide by for 3 days before we board our ship for our cruise. (Our Room with a View)

I continue to ask for prayers that these procedures work and I'll be as fit as a fiddle!
We had lunch with Ruth Turpin, our travel agent who owns Cruises, Etc., in Fort Worth, and she had some wonderful suggestions for us as she has just returned from Venice. We ate at the Baker Street Pub

and decided to have fish and chips for lunch as we probably won't be having that on our cruise!

It was delicious.
Two weeks ago several of us gathered for lunch at the Highlands and celebrated 3 birthdays. We do this on an annual basis. We used to all paint together at the Upstairs Gallery so this has become a tradition.

I had Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and spinach and actually ate all of it! Birthdays are always a good excuse to eat (as if I needed an excuse!)

And speaking of food, I have just finished a wonderful book that was written by Julia Child. That movie, Julie and Julia has created a monster! I read everything I can get my hands on about her and plan to do some serious cooking when my back heals. I adore a challenging recipe and can't wait to dig in again. On my friend, Jo Ann Patton's recommendation, I ordered "My Life in France".

Not only is it a delightful little book, you literally salivate when she talks about food and it's preparation. She has such a keen wit and along with her nephew, she put this book together right before she went to join all the great chefs that are now in Gourmet Heaven. In this book she talks about sitting for a well know artist who painted her portrait for the cover of Time Magazine. I researched that and found the cover. I don't think it really does her justice as she was much more attractive that this portrait but then I just could be prejudiced. Reading this would certainly benefit anyone who loves food and loves to eat.

She is truly missed by all of her followers ... and I definitely fall into that category!
Jo Ann also recommended "Pass the Polenta" which is written by Teresa Lust.

On the cover it says that Teresa Lust was appropriately named as her passion for food is in every word of this provocative little book. I can't wait to read it.
The movie, "The September Issue" has opened in NYC. I can't wait for it to come to our area. As I said in a previous post, Anna Wintour, the Editor of Vouge, is the niece of a dear friend of mine and is the subject of the docudrama. I saw this pencil drawing of her in the Times and loved it.

We purchased a new TV for our bedroom and we gave the old one to our son. When he was moving it into Ian's room, he hit the doorknob and the screen shattered. Poor baby! It cut his hand up pretty badly. I'm so thankful that this injury was no worse than it is.

Guess I'd better sign off for now. I'm supposed to be resting!
I once again want to thank you for all your prayers. I wasn't a bit nervous this morning and we'll continue to hope for great results. In fact, I plan on looking much younger and thinner in a few weeks and riding my old horse, Cricket, again ;-)

All kidding aside, I have all the confidence in the world in Dr. Cottingham and I know everything will turn out for the best. Let's hope so as Frank is getting a little tired of being the chief cook and bottle washer!
