CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN , A CELEBRATION AND CEPHALONIA, GREECE

Today is a very special day ... Papa's birthday! We slept late and then had breakfast on the veranda. It was a lovely beginning to a lovely day

After we ate, I decided to stay on board so Frank decided to go into town. We were docked in Argostoli, Greece in Cephalonia (kefalonia) which was the location used for the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin with Nicholas Cage.

The island is the famous resting place of Odysseus from Illiad and Odyssey. As we pulled into port, the water was smooth as glass, and the view was beautiful.

He took a tour of the town and stopped at this little restaurant for a beer. There are sidewalk cafe's everywhere. Wish our weather was conducive for this at home. We love to sit outside and eat and or drink wine. It's just too hot and humid here in Texas. Funny, even though you're on the ocean, it doesn't seen humid. We love this kind of weather.

He ran into one of the boys from the ship who served us coffee every morning. They get a little time off in port once their daily assignments are completed.

He took a photograph of Frank for me so I could see what he was up to on his 76th birthday without me!

He got back to the ship in time for lunch. We had a delicious pasta salad which was a little different from most pasta salads that we've had, but very tasty.

After lunch we decided to go to the movie. "Cheri" with Michelle Pheiffer was showing in the movie theatre.

The Screening Room is a small theatre but very comfortable with recliners to sit in and a table at your side. If you weren't careful, you could fall asleep very easily! The only bad thing about this theatre is that it only seated 27 people and some of the passengers would go in early, put their belongings in their chairs and then leave until time for the movie to start. It reminded me of the people at resorts that get up at daybreak, place towels on the chairs by the pool, and then go back to bed for a couple of hours, NOT FAIR!

How wonderful it was to escape recessionary life in 2009 for a much more glamorous world - Paris of the Belle Epoque. Every scene was a feast for the eye - including some marvelous Art Nouveau interiors - and the sun always seems to be shining on dewy gardens or a blue-green sea, not unlike the days that we have been enjoying here on the Mediterranean Sea.

Frank bought us some Nougat whenhe was in town from this candy store and we enjoyed that along with popcorn during the film. We have had Nougat when we have been in Greece before and we love it. It's much better than you can get here.

After the movie we went to the shops and I bought myself a hat and a tote bag to celebrate Frank's birthday!
He then decided to go to the casino so I went back to the suite.

The show this evening was a tenor from Marble Falls, TX and he was excellent. After the show, we enjoyed a delicious dinner of lamb chops and then I surprised Frank with a birthday cake.

The waiters sang Happy Birthday to him in their native tongue.
After dinner we listened to some music in one of the lounges and scurried off to bed.

It was a perfect ending for a perfect day.

XOXO, Pcasso
